Package testing or packaging testing involves the measurement of a characteristic or property involved with packaging. Testing measures the effects and interactions of the levels of packaging, the package contents, external forces, and end-use.
Packaging tests can be used for:
• Subjecting packages (and contents) to stresses and dynamics found in the field
• Reproducing the types of damage to packages and contents found in actual shipments
• Controlling the uniformity of production of packages or components
Several standards organizations publish test methods for package testing. Included are:
• International Organization for Standardization (ISO),
• ASTM International,
• European Committee for Standardization (CEN),
• TAPPI,
• Military Standards,
• ISTA (International Safe Transit Association).
Some of the packaging tests, that are used for the determination of the charateristics of the packaging are:
• conditioning (temperature, humidity, ...),
• degradation of Packages,
• shock and impact,
• vibration,
• compression.
